Some Thoughts on Bach’s Birthday

By | March 21, 2020

Today is the 335th birthday of the great Lutheran composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). It is hard to underestimate his importance in the history of music. Besides being a consummate musician he was a man of intense faith, something that is evident not only in his vocal music but even in his instrumental music. Standing upon the shoulders of giants, he himself became a giant and was used by God to bring incredible beauty and a powerful expression of the Christian faith into the world. Since many of us are stuck in our homes during this Coronavirus outbreak, I thought I would share with you a couple of documentaries about Bach produced by the BBC.

The first is part of their series entitled The Great Composers which was first aired in the late 1990s. The very first episode was about Bach and features among others a young Andreas Schiff (pianist) and younger John Eliot Gardiner (conductor). Later in 2013 Gardiner worked with the BBC to produce a documentary entitled Bach: A Passionate Life.

I pray that you and your loved ones stay safe and stay sane during this crazy time and find some joy and comfort in this music.
