Text Study – Handel’s Messiah

Autograph of Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah

Did you know that Handel’s Messiah sets 81 Scripture passages to music? It is one of the most amazing and most performed works of all sacred music. Singing or listening to it is a great way to be immersed into Scripture and the story of salvation. To enter more deeply into this story, click here for a Text Study of Handel’s Messiah. I hope that you find this study as interesting as I did. Some of Handel’s most powerful and inspired settings are for passages from 1 Corinthians 15 (the “Resurrection Chapter”) and the Book of Revelation (see the autograph of the Hallelujah Chorus on the right).

Revelation is full of songs of the Church Triumphant. Fortunately, we don’t have to wait until we get to heaven to sing or hear some of these songs. Through the gifts of inspired composers like Handel, God has allowed us to enter into The Eternal Song now: the song of redemption through Jesus Christ that is unceasingly being sung by the Saints and Angels.
