Some Thoughts on Bach’s Birthday

By | March 21, 2020

Today is the 335th birthday of the great Lutheran composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). It is hard to underestimate his importance in the history of music. Besides being a consummate musician he was a man of intense faith, something that is evident not only in his vocal music but even in his instrumental music. Standing upon the shoulders of giants, he himself became a giant and was used by God to bring incredible beauty and a powerful expression of the Christian faith into the world. Since many of us are stuck in our homes during this Coronavirus outbreak, I thought I would share with you a documentary about Bach featuring the English conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner. On YouTube you can also find a 1997 documentary by the BBC about Bach that was part of their Great Composers series.

I pray that you and your loved ones stay safe and stay sane during this crazy time and find some joy and comfort in this music.
