A Lesson from King Nebuchadnezzar

By | April 4, 2013

In our daily devotions this week, my wife and I have been reading the Book of Daniel. After reading Chapter 3, it occurred to me that for some reason we have a tendency to turn the gifts God gives us into idols. This is what King Nebuchadnezzar did in Daniel 3. In the previous chapter, God gave him a dream about a statue that only Daniel could interpret. The dream was a prophecy about the future kingdoms of the world. The head of the statue was made of gold and Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar that this head of gold represented Nebuchadnezzar’s own kingdom.

So what does Nebuchadnezzar do? In the very next chapter we are told that he apparently took this dream very literally and had a HUGE gold statue made of himself. This statue was so big it was about 90 feet tall and 9 feet wide.

Now that is a LOT of gold. Not only that, he also required everyone to bow down and worship it whenever they heard music, or be thrown into the fiery furnace.

This led me to ask a few questions: In our own lives and in our faith, have we turned any of God gifts into idols? A good question for us to ponder.
